Things You Might Be Wondering (But Haven’t Asked Yet, updated on 9/15/2025, Wallisellen, Switzerland )

  • Question 1: This is a new lab—will I spend a lot of time helping set it up? Will that take away from my research?

Answer: Yes, the research group officially launches in January 2026, so you’ll be joining a young and dynamic lab that’s still growing. That said, we’re not starting entirely from scratch. Stanford CEE has a long and strong tradition of shared core facilities, well-maintained instrumentation, and collaborative infrastructure. Our lab will also be equipped with newly purchased instruments, and each team member will take ownership as a “super-user” of the instruments they frequently use—ensuring smooth operation and shared responsibility. While there will naturally be some startup tasks early on, these will be balanced and distributed, and we’re committed to ensuring they do not compromise your learning and research time. In fact, being part of building something from the ground up is a great way to learn, take leadership, and grow together.

  • Question 2: What are the graduation requirements?

Answer: First of all, you must meet all coursework requirements set by Stanford and pass all necessary exams to be knowledgeably qualified for a PhD. From a research perspective, you need to assemble a compelling dissertation from several pieces of work, demonstrating your ability to identify an environmental problem, recognize knowledge gaps, formulate appropriate research questions, design experiments, analyze data, draw conclusions and communicate your findings clearly,  and ultimately write and publish your work. While peer-reviewed publications are important and necessary for building your credentials and earning your PhD, the skills you learn along the way, and your ability to apply them to address new problems and educate future generations, are equally important.

A successful PhD student in the group should be able to demonstrate independence and transferable skills, the ability to take insights from one area and creatively apply them to solve problems in another. This means not only completing the assigned project, but also developing their own scientific identity. By the time they approach graduation, I hope the final chapter of their dissertation will reflect a question they have long been curious about but never formally explored. It does not have to be a grand, world-changing topic, what matters is that it contributes meaningfully to the field, even if the results are negative. At that stage, each student should have become a leader in their own niche, capable of carrying out sophisticated research, from formulating original, impactful hypotheses to designing and executing rigorous experiments, and ultimately answering their research questions with confidence and clarity. Just as importantly, by the time they graduate, the PI hopes they will not only have learned from the lab, but also shared knowledge and perspectives that teach the rest of the team members in return. As the PI, I will do my utmost to provide the resources, mentorship, and opportunities needed for students to develop critical thinking, technical expertise, and a signature research direction they can truly call their own.

  • Question 3: How many years will it take to finish a Ph.D.?

Answer: As related to the previous answer, here’s no fixed number of years, it depends on your pace, research direction, and personal development. That said, if you’re dedicated, passionate, and engaged, around 5 years is a typical and realistic timeline. As context, the PI (Dr. Yu) entered environmental microbiology and chemistry during graduate school (with a hydrology background), completed a Ph.D. in 5.5 years with a reasonable numbers of publications and skills, and has now been in this field for nearly a decade. You’ll receive active mentorship throughout your training, including: Regular 1-on-1 and group meetings; Annual reviews to track progress, refine goals, and ensure support. We are fully committed to your success and will work with you to ensure your time here in the group is both productive and fulfilling.
