What Drives Our Research
Our group focuses on Functional Environmental Microbiology and Environmental Analytical Chemistry—in short, we study microbes and chemicals. We aim to understand how microbial communities interact with anthropogenic chemicals and natural toxins across diverse ecosystems. In the early years of the group, our research may be primarily guided by Yaochun's scientific curiosity. However, we are excited about the possibilities that lie ahead as more talented and self-motivated students and researchers join the lab. We believe that new research directions can naturally emerge from ongoing projects and discussions. One of the core mentoring philosophies in the Yu Research Group is to encourage and support the development of independent research ideas. We see our group not just as a research unit, but as an incubator for innovative scientific thinking, where early-career researchers are empowered to pursue their own questions while building on a shared foundation of expertise and research interests.
Inspired by Art in Science, we also enjoy reflecting on our group’s trajectory through logo design. Since the Yu Research Group launched in January 2026, we created our first-generation group logo. As our research evolves and expands, we will design new logos that best represent our current focus—an effort the entire group will contribute to together in the future!
